So, you’ve signed up and are ready to head to Machu Picchu! Our expedition is an absolute beauty – you’ll see parts of the Peruvian Andes that other treks don’t even come close to. But if you spend your days hiking and your nights by the campfire, you’re probably wondering what the heck you’ll need to pack. Clothes

Unless you are ready to walk in the cold, your hiking gear will be the first thing you think about. We recommend… 

  • Walking boots (make sure they are well worn) 
  • Sneakers or sandals (to wear in transit and around camp)
  • 3 midweight hiking socks
  • Underwear (synthetic instead of cotton) 
  • Shorts x 1 (knee length or below)
  • Light pants x 1
  • Synthetic/wool/silk long johns
  • Waterproof pants (Note: make sure the pants have zippers at least to the knee).
  • Long sleeve base layer x 1 (silk, wool or synthetic)
  • Short sleeve base layer x 2 (as above)
  • Medium weight fleece x 1

Street clothes

The weather in Peru can be changeable, with hot days and cold nights. Prepare for any outcome with the following…

  • A down jacket (weighing at least 600 grams)
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof poncho

Accessories

And no, we’re not talking about a flashy scarf or fedora. These little details will save your life… 

  • A fleece hat to wear in the mornings and at night.
  • Sunglasses (category 3)
  • A sun hat with a wide brim to cover the face and neck.
  • A pair of lightweight gloves with wool or synthetic lining.
  • A pair of waterproof gloves or mittens (preferably down)

Hiking equipment

The technical aspects you will need to know during the tour. Don’t worry, there is nothing too complicated… 

  • Walking sticks
  • Small backpack for daily use (30 to 35 liters) 
  • A large suitcase or travel bag to carry your equipment to Peru.
  • Dry bags or plastic bags
  • Water bottles and water bladders: You should be able to carry three liters of water while hiking.
  • A warm sleeping bag (with a comfort rating of -15°C or lower)
  • Sunscreen with at least SPF 30
  • Lip balm SPF
  • The best DEET-based insect repellent products are
  • Hand sanitizer: You should have enough supplies for the entire expedition. Remember, it’s better to look for it than to search for it.
  • Personal hygiene items (as little as possible! Wet wipes and a nail brush are very useful)
