For the Inca Trail, the sooner you book, the better (at least 6 months in advance). Because entry to the Inca Trail is limited to 500 people per day (and during the month of February it is closed). In addition to the limited number of tickets, the Inca Trail is one of the most popular trails in the world! Tickets for the Inca Trail are nominal and can only be purchased upon payment. Therefore, the sooner you organize and secure your entry, the better.
For trips to Machu Picchu from May to September that include WayanPicchu Mountain, it is recommended to book at least 4 months in advance, as these months are very busy and there are limited places for Machu Picchu and WayanPicchu Mountain.

To visit Machu Picchu with one of our Machu Picchu travel tours, the best time is definitely during the dry season, as during these months the sky is almost always clear and the sun shines. The dry season runs from May to October and the busiest months are from June to August. For this period it is advisable to book in advance.
The Expedition train is the most recommended for those going from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes after touring the Sacred Valley of the Incas, since the train’s departure time is more compatible with the end of the journey. In addition, the trip takes place late at night. Therefore, there are not many tourist attractions on the route and it is a considerably short trip.
One of the advantages of the Vistadome is that its windows are larger than those of the Expedition (and also more comfortable). For this reason, for trips from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, the Vistadome train is recommended, as this trip usually takes place in the afternoon and passengers can enjoy the scenery along the way. In addition, the trip from Aguas Calientes to Poroy takes 3.5 hours and, during the trip, Vistadome offers entertainment and service on board.
If you are traveling to a high altitude destination such as Puno and Cusco, it is important to be aware of altitude sickness. This condition often occurs when traveling to areas that have a much higher altitude than the normal altitude in your home country. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and include headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
Here are some tips to combat altitude sickness:
- Exercise a few days before leaving for your high altitude destination.
- When you arrive at your destination, don’t immediately set out to explore; take a few hours to rest.
- Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking, and drink plenty of water.
- On the first day of your arrival, eat as much as necessary and avoid greasy, spicy and hot foods.
